A Trekker's Journey through the Biodiverse and Jagged Terrain of Romblon's Highest Mountain

Introduction
Are you an adventure-seeker looking for a challenge? Do you love hiking and trekking through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth? Then Mount Guiting-Guiting may be just what you're looking for. Located on Sibuyan Island in the Philippines, this mountain is the tallest peak in the province of Romblon, rising to an elevation of 6,752 feet (2,058 meters) above sea level. But be warned – this is not for the faint of heart. With its steep slopes, jagged peaks, and challenging terrain, G2 is considered one of the toughest climbs in the Philippines and is rated 9/9 in difficulty by the local mountaineering community.

The Biodiversity of Mount Guiting-Guiting
Beyond the challenge, one of the main reasons why trekkers from all over the world come to climb this mountain is because of its incredible biodiversity. Dubbed the Galapagos of Asia, G2 boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna, with several species unique to the island. Some of the notable plants and animals that can be found here are Nepenthes sibuyanensis and Nepenthes argentii (pitcher plants), Heterospathe sibuyanensis Becc. or Bil-is (a rare palm), the Agamyla sibuyanensis or Sibuyan lipstick plant, and the Myrmephytum beccarii Elmer, a type of ant plant. Another unique flora endemic to the mountain is the Begonia gitingensis Elmer or Guiting-guiting begonia that is commonly found on exposed and broken ground.

Section 3: The Trails and the Difficulty
Newcomers to Mount Guiting-Guiting have two main trail options to reach the summit – the Tampayan Trail and the Olango Trail – both starting from Magdiwang town. The Tampayan Trail is the more popular choice because of its more straightforward terrain and quicker ascent. It follows a steep and treacherous course traversing over sharp ultramafic rocks, boulders, and heath land or grassland that are notoriously exposed and unforgiving. Meanwhile, the Olango Trail is more challenging and takes a longer time to complete. Hikers with less experience are advised to take the Tampayan Trail. The Olango Trail is suitable for those who have previous hiking experience and who want to experience breathtaking sceneries, serrated ridges, and beautiful camping sites.

The Highlights of Mount Guiting-Guiting
Whether you choose the Tampayan or Olango Trail to conquer G2, there are several highlight spots during the climb that you shouldn't miss. The peak of Mayo's Peak offers spectacular views of the island, and the famous sharp peaks of this mountain. Bulod's Spring on the Tampayan Trail is a refreshing water source that can keep trekkers hydrated during the long hike. It is ideal for swimming and soaking, especially on warmer days, and even serves as an excellent spot for camps.
